Hampstead Garden Suburb Free Church

Harvest 2007

In the Harvest Thanksgiving Service on September 30th the children of Junior Church brought produce to contribute to the Harvest collection for homeless people in Barnet. The Beginners portrayed Harvest Mice who enjoyed eating the Harvest produce which was decorating the church. (see photo) We gave thanks for God’s Creation and heard how we need to share the earth’s resources more fairly. The Juniors very graphically acted out a traditional folk story from Vietnam which describes the difference between heaven and hell. In hell, people have chopsticks that are a yard long so that they cannot reach their mouths. In heaven although the chopsticks are the same length the people are happy as they feed one another. There is enough food if we share it. (see photo)

The Fellowship group presented ‘We’re all connected (cut the carbon). They suggested the following ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

·        Turn off the TV and other electrical equipment instead of leaving them on standby.

·        Walk, cycle and use public transport instead of asking your parents to drive you.

·        Carry a plastic bag in your pocket so you do not need a new bag to carry home shopping.

·        Don’t leave the tap running and waste water.

·        Instead of buying bottled water fill up a bottle with tap water and take it with you.

·        Help to increase your families recycling by collecting cardboard & plastic which can then be taken to the recycling centre at Summers Lane.

After describing the work of the Commitment for Life programme of the United Reformed Church in Zimbabwe the Harvest Sunday collection was taken to fund Christian Aid partners working in Zimbabwe.
